Activities and duties:
Supreme Council or General Assembly of the Society
Members of the Supreme Council are elected among the candidates for regional representative branches for a period of four years. Elections are held by secret ballot, either by correspondence or electronically. The process takes place under the supervision of relevant authorities of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology (MSRT).
The duties of this Council, which meet at least twice a year, are as follows:
- Listening to the semi-annual report of the Board of Directors and making decisions based on it
- Ratifying the balance-sheet and the budget of the Society
- Determining the general policy of the Society
- Choosing the final candidates for the Society chair election
- Selecting the members of the Board of Directors and two inspectors among themselves based on the provisions of Article 15 of the Society's statute
- Establishing regional branches
- Defining the number of members for the Supreme Council according to the number of associate members of each region, based on Note 2 of Article 11 of the Society's statute
- Reviewing and approving the bylaws proposed by the Board of Directors and the Supreme Council within the framework of the statute
- Addressing members' suggestions
Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Society:
The chairman of the Supreme Council is obliged to announce the order to convene the General Assembly of the Society to the chairman of the Society; then, the chairman of the Society must send an invitation in writing, electronically, or by placing advertisements in one of the widely circulated newspapers to convene the General Assembly. The invitation for the General Assembly's convening must be made at least 15 days before the assembly's convening. If the General Assembly is not officialized after the first session, the second session will be formed at least 20 days later and officialized with the number of present members in the session.
Secretary of the Supreme Council of the Society
The Secretary of the Supreme Council is obliged to follow up on the correspondence and the matters and issues related to the Supreme Council.
Board of Directors of the Society
The Board of Directors of the Society consists of the chairman of the Society, the chairman of the Supreme Council, seven members of the Board of Directors, and two alternate members elected by the Supreme Council for a period of two years.
The duties of the Board of Directors, which meet at least once a month, are as follows:
- Implementing the policy of the Society defined by the Supreme Council
- Making decisions about the financial issues of the Society
- Defining employment conditions for the executive members of the Society
- Receiving funds and accepting gifts, donations, and research and educational scholarships within the framework of the Society's goals
- Holding lectures, conferences, and seminars under the relevant bylaws
- Proposing EGMs (Extraordinary General Meeting) of the Supreme Council
- Preparing annual report and balance-sheet to be submitted to the Supreme Council
- Filing lawsuits on behalf of the Society and responding to the lawsuits of natural and legal entities against the Society in all competent authorities
- Drafting executive bylaws to be submitted to the Supreme Council
- Determining the necessary scientific and executive committees, the number of members of each committee, and supervising their activities
- Selecting and introducing the Society's representatives to domestic and foreign scientific societies
- Preparing membership and other required bylaws and submitting them to the Supreme Council
- Providing suggestions and solutions to the Supreme Council
The Society's chairman of the Board of Directors:
The chairman of the Board of Directors is the executor of the Board of Directors' decisions and is responsible for handling all current matters and signing all the correspondence. In his absence, his duties are assigned to his vice-chairman.
Vice-chairman and Secretary of the Society:
At the first meeting, the Board of Directors selects one person to be in charge of the secretariat (the Secretary of the Society).
the duties of the Secretary of the Society are:
- Managing the secretariat of the Society
- Collecting the minutes of the meetings and votes of each organization of the Society
- Attracting new members for The Society under the terms and conditions approved in the statute and the relevant bylaws
- Doing the correspondence
- Performing the tasks assigned by the Board of Directors
Treasurer of the Society
The Society's treasurer is responsible for collecting membership fees and other incomes, paying expenses according to the Society's chairman's orders and keeping the Society's calculations and expense documents in the secretariat.
Inspector of the Society
The inspector participates in all official meetings of the Board of Directors and the Supreme Council and provides necessary reports while supervising.
Alternate members of the Society
If members of the Supreme Council resign or are unable to cooperate with the Society due to study opportunities or any other conditions, alternate members will replace them.
Secretariat of the Society
Upon the Society's chairman's proposal, the Board of Directors completes the secretariat of the Society according to its requirements and hires people to manage the matters of the secretariat.
Representatives of the Society
One person from all research institutes, chemical industries, and universities with a chemistry department or chemistry-related majors will be introduced to the Regional Council in writing by the relevant director or chairman.
The duties of Representatives are as follows:
- Establishing constructive relationships between the members of the Society at work or on the Regional Council
- Attracting new members from among colleagues and students
- Informing the members about the news and enactments of the Society
- Submitting the suggestions of the Society's members in their workplaces to the Regional Council
- Reporting chemistry-related news of the office to the editor-in-chief of the Society's newsletter
Scientific committees of the Society
The Society's scientific committees are as follows:
Organic Chemistry Committee, Analytical Chemistry Committee, Inorganic Chemistry Committee, Physical Chemistry Committee, Chemistry Education Committee, Catalysis Committee, Chemistry and Environment Committee, Electrochemical Committee, Applied Chemistry Committee, Zeolite Committee, Chemometrics Committee, Industrial Chemistry Committee, Equipment and Chemicals Supply Committee, Oil, Gas, and Petrochemistry Committee, Scientific Ethics Committee, Medicinal Chemistry Committee, Nuclear Committee.
Concerning their nature, the Society's scientific committees can operate with the following purposes. Needless to mention that the committees' programs are applicable after the approval of the Board of Directors.
- Holding specialized seminars and chemistry congresses at national, regional, and international levels in the desired specialty
- Providing workshops (theoretical, practical, instrumental, etc.)
- Holding specialized congresses for students
- Holding specialized congresses for faculty members
- If necessary, revising and updating specialized educational programs at all university and pre-university levels within the framework of existing laws
- Creating technical, scientific platforms to introduce the existing specialties of the Society to the Learned Society of Chemistry and other interested communities
- Establishing scientific relationships with domestic and foreign scientific institutes and Societies
- Establishing relationships in order to provide scientific, research, and other services to relevant organizations, institutes, and industries within the framework of the statute
- Cooperating in publishing newsletters and scientific journals in related specialties
- Cooperating to select and encourage leading chemists of each specialty and distinguish students and introduce them to the Society's Board of Directors
- Holding scientific competitions to encourage distinguished students
- Being active in introducing the relevant sub-disciplines to the Society to encourage distinguished students to continue their studies in the field of chemistry
- Guiding relevant experts to write and translate books and publish specialized journals
The duties of Society's scientific committees are as follows:
- Deciding and making the necessary arrangements regarding all the goals of the relevant specialized committees and submitting suggestions to the Society's Board of Directors
- Establishing relationships with other specialized committees of the Society
- Reviewing and providing viewpoints and suggestions and implementing the matters referred by the Society's Board of Directors
- Submitting written annual scientific reports of the activities of the committee to the Society's Board of Directors
- Inviting relevant experts to write and translate books and publish specialized articles and submitting proposals to the Society
- Appointing the referees of the scientific committee and reviewing articles submitted to the relevant specialized congress
Journal Committee of the Society
To regulate and standardize the Society's journals, the "Publications Council" is formed to maintain the integrity of decisions made towards their progress and timely publication.
The members of the Journal Council are:
- Chairman of the Iranian Chemical Society (as the Council's chairman)
- Chairman of the Society's Supreme Council
- Secretary of the Society
- Editors-in-chief of all scholarly journals of the Society
- An experienced and active professor from every sub-discipline (Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry) selected by the Society's Board of Directors for a period of 4 years
- Managing editor of JICS journal (Journal of Iranian Chemical Society)
The duties and authorities of the Society Journal Committee are as follows:
- Determining and presenting the main policies of the Society's scholarly journals and maintaining the unity of the method of Journal regarding executive and financial issues
- Supervising the proper implementation of the bylaws on the publishing method of scholarly journals
- Supervising the appropriate performance of the managing editor of journals and providing constructive suggestions to the Editorial Board
- Revising and making decisions about articles returned for revision from the Society to the committee
- All matters that are assigned to the committee according to the current articles of this bylaw
- Publishing new journals proposed by the committee and approved by the Board of Directors
The Society's Managing Editor of the Journal Committee
The duties and authorities of the managing editor are as follows:
- Being responsible for all legal matters of the Journal and being accountable to the law
- Preparing domestic and executive bylaws for the Journal, redacting and proposing the annual budget and submitting it to the Society's Journal Council, setting financial rules and instructions, dismissing and hiring of the Journal staff in consultation with the editor-in-chief, preparing and writing contracts and agreements related to the Journal, preserving the Journal's assets and properties, holding meetings of the Editorial Board, establishing relationships between the Journal and the Scientific Publishing House and sending articles for publication in coordination with the editor-in-chief, planning for the distribution of the journals, and other tasks assigned
Editor-in-chief of the Society
The duties and authorities of the editor-in-chief are as follows:
- Being responsible for all of the scientific matters of the Journal and signing all letters of receipt, submission to review, acceptance, or rejection of articles
- Preparing Call For Paper (CFP) sheets, writing methods, reviewing methods, and scientific bylaws; summarizing the opinions of the referees and votes of the editorial board as well as evaluating and classifying the referees
- Presiding the Editorial Board meetings
- Proposing the dismissal and recruitment of the Editorial Board members to the Society's Journal Council
Society's Editorial Board of Journal Committee
The duties and authorities of the Editorial Board are as follows:
- Approving articles scientifically
- Providing executive suggestions for improvement of the Journal
Regional branches of the Society
Organizations of regional branches are:
- General Assembly of members of each region
- Regional Council
- The Council of Representatives consists of representatives of universities, research institutes, and chemical industries in the region and council representatives of each region in the Supreme Council of the Society (Society Representatives)
The Duties of the General Assembly of members of each region are as follows:
The General Assembly of each region is formed by the meeting of the Society's associate members of that region. The meetings' officiality is subject to the presence of the majority of associate members (half plus one of the total members). The decisions taken by the majority vote of the members present at the meetings are valid.
The agenda of the General Assembly meetings are as follows:
- Listening to the report of the Regional Council
- Determining the general annual policy of the region
- Addressing members' suggestions
The duties of the Regional Council are as follows:
- Supervising the implementation of the Society's policy by the Board of Directors and the Supreme Council
- Introducing the Society and its activities to the scientific and industrial organizations of the region
- Communicating with the representatives of Higher education institutions and industrial centers in the region
- Attracting new members
- Receiving membership fees of the Society members of the region
- Defining the annual activity plan of the Society
- Following up on holding lectures, conferences, and seminars in accordance with the relevant bylaws
- Receiving gifts and donations from natural and legal entities.
All the funds collected from each region, including gifts and donations, will be credited to the Society's account. With the approval of the Society's Board of Directors, a part of the received fund from each region will be given to the chairman of the region to cover regional expenses in accordance with the proposed annual plan.
- Communicating with the committees of the Society
- Preparing an annual report to be submitted to the General Assembly and sending a copy to the Society's Board of Directors
- Carrying out some of the authorities of the Board of Directors of the Society delegated to the Regional Council
